Carol's grandfather was just a member of Rittenhouse. If David Rittenhouse's line eventually died out, or at some point had a daughter, then Carol's grandfather could have made it very high into Rittenhouse. It is implied that Carol herself is high up in Rittenhouse, which would make sense if her grandfather was.
