Martha Corey was one of the women tried and executed in the Salem Witch Trials.
In the Timeless Universe[]
Martha Corey had been accused of casting spells on large groups of people. This accusation was told to the town in the tavern by John Hathorne. This was followed by Abiah Franklin coming to her defense, claiming that Martha talks the birds, which while eccentric, is not witchcraft. Hathorne continues to attempt to discredit Martha by claiming her accuser had been struck blind during her trial, likely due to one of Martha's spells. Abiah retorts that the accuser was a child with an active imagination who should not have been taken seriously. This is followed by Hathorne announcing Abiah's accusation.
Later, when Lucy Preston and Garcia Flynn came to question Bathsheba Pope about Abiah's accusation, she accuses Bathsheba of accusing Martha due to a property dispute. Bathsheba admits to accusing some women, but not her sister, Abiah.
When Lucy is accused of witchcraft by her mother, Carolyn Preston, Abiah reveals that Martha had also been accused of signing the devil's book in the woods. Martha feels the need to defend her reputation, claiming that she's a gospel woman, but Lucy understands this. She understands she's being falsely accused of being different, not actually being evil.
Martha is later saved by Lucy, Flynn and Rufus Carlin, like all those who were intended to hang for their accusations of witchcraft. They are likely taken to New Hampshire of a year as Lucy instructed Abiah to do and likely return to Salem after this.
